Why did you decide to take courses in Modern Greek (language)? If you pursued the minor in Modern Greek Studies, why did you decide to do this?
Modern Greek is a language I have found to be both poetic and key in comprehending scientific terms. Its richness in literature, prose, poems, and theatrical works enhances cultural literacy and makes one feel that they have received a well-rounded education. As a science major, knowledge of Modern Greek language has been invaluable in understanding terminology associated with introductory and upper-level biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses.
What did you like the most about your Greek classes? If you took the minor, what did you like most in the other approved courses for the minor that you took (e.g., history, political science, religion)?
The professor’s responsiveness to student queries and the small class size allowed for more complete understanding of current and historical events. Though Modern Greek is grammatically intense, the professor communicates topics in ways that inspire students and helps them enjoy other facets of Modern Greek language and culture.
Considering your current position and successes, was there anything in the classes or experiences you had, in pursuing Modern Greek and/or Modern Greek Studies, that contributed to your perspectives and accomplishments?
Vintage and contemporary films viewed in class had a recurring theme of social criticism, especially in regards to women’s education. Women in films were urged to pursue higher education in order to have a stronger position in society. If anything, the Modern Greek Minor has reinforced my view of the value of higher education as a way of improving women’s place in society.
What advice would you give students thinking about studying Modern Greek, or taking the MGSP minor, but haven’t made up their minds?
The courses I took in Modern Greek and Modern Greek Studies expanded my vocabulary and improved my performance on standardized exams. Additionally, it strengthened my appreciation of linguistic wealth. Whether pursuing a serious career in arts or in science, Modern Greek is an indispensable reference and guide.
